To Cut Obesity, Don´t eat Soda and Pizza


Several US researchers believe that if the government put 18 percent of tax on pizza and soda, the country's struggle over obesity will lower down an average weight by 5 pounds or a total of 2 kilograms per year for each person.

According to the researchers, American government is spending $147 billion a year in health costs; they believe that taxing pizza and soda will be an effective weapon to battle against obesity in the United States.

Kiyah Duffey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, wrote about this policies may not solve the obesity epidemic in its entirety and may face considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers. However, this could prove an important strategy to address over consumption that can help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among US adults.

CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden supports taxes on soft drinks as well as the American Heart Association because of the growing concern of two-thirds of American either overweight or obese. Policymakers are constantly looking at taxing as an effective way to address the obesity problem on a larger scale.

According to Duffey study of 18 to 30 year-old young adults from 1985 to 2006, there is significant link between the price increased of unhealthy food with the 7 percent drop of calories consumed from soda and 12 percent drop in calories consumed from pizza.

In addition to their study, the team has estimated that calorie intake will lower down by 2 kg per person per year if the government will implement their propose amount of tax which is 18 percent.

Doctors Mitchell Katz and Rajiv Bhatia of the San Francisco Department of Public Health favored the proposal of Duffey, they said on a commentary that taxing unhealthy food is an appropriate way to correct a market favors over unhealthy food choices versus the healthier alternatives.
